Making Christmas cards is one of my favorite ways to get into the Christmas spirit. However, this year David and I will be moving early December and all my craft supplies are packed deep inside boxes (not to mention the issue of not having free time). I was about to just order picture cards from an online site to send out until I saw the price- gasp! All that money and none of the fun- just didn't seem worth it. But, I didn't want to skip the idea all together since so many wonderful things happened this year and it's tons of fun to revisit them with all our loved ones.
Enter David's Idea:
We would find another way to "send" Christmas cards to family and friends and then take the money we save in NOT doing so and give it as a meaningful gift. This idea is rooted in the Advent Conspiracy which encourages us to spend less on Christmas and give more.
Now, lets be clear. Making Christmas cards to send out is not bad- I'd be doing it too if I had the supplies and time. I'm just unable to make my traditional cards this year and chose to forgo the buying option.

The total cost for stamps, paper, envelopes, and prints for all of our family and friends to receive our Christmas card was $40.36
That small amount bought a pair of goats at Andando.org. Their mission is to alleviate poverty through micro development and our Christmas card money will bring a family: milk which is a vital source of protein, the ability to breed them ensuring our gift will sustain itself over the years as well as provide a small income to them.
This is what you would have received, pasted to a card, with cute embellishments, sent via snail-mail:
This is our new and improved card, costing nothing but time, and sent via link
