30 years ago today, my parents got married!!!
I wrote them a poem on their anniversary in 2008, romanticizing their first 24 years together. Here is a portion of that poem:
On October 1st
their dreams came true
as they both said “I
forever do”
It all started about
27 years past
when his mom called to
said, "come over fast"
There was a cute girl
working for them,
repainting the office with her friend.
She caught his eye as
soon as he walked in
there was something
about this girl, her heart he had to win.
She was beautiful, brush in hand, standing on a paint sheet
his breath he managed
to catch, but his heart skipped a beat.
He was gorgeous, she
thought, with green eyes and a white smile.
She knew he was the
one and they’d be together for a long while.
When he strolled into
that shop, he walked into her life
a few years later they
became husband and wife.
On October 1st their
dreams came true
as they both said “I
forever do”
She walked toward
him so lovely dressed in white
nervously his
palms got sweaty and his throat got tight.
Looking into each others eyes and with one heart,
they both promised to love one another till death do they part.
He took her hand, as
she took his name
on that day two people
became the same.
The preacher announced
them man and wife
he carried her down
the aisle as they started their life.
They both knew
marriage would be rough
but the good parts
made up for the tough.
Fours years in, God
blessed them with a son
showing them a family
was way more fun.
A few years later
their family grew
giving them a baby
girl as number two.
A boy came a little
while after in 1993
it went boy, girl, boy,
and then the last was a she.
We grew up well, learning from the best
now trying out our
wings and flying the nest.
Soon we’ll all be
flown, leaving them back at two
with memories at large
and regrets at few.
On October 1st their
dreams came true
as they both said “I
forever do”
